Whether you're super proud of your Connecticut roots, attempting to show some guests around, or a recent transplant, having your very own Connecticut Day is a great way to celebrate the things about this state that make it special. There are good sides and bad sides to every state, but this trip is designed to focus on the good- and the downright delicious. No plans this weekend? Then why not have a Connecticut Day? Depending on where you live you could fit all nine of these activities in to one day, making for a pretty epic Saturday. Check it out:
1. Take the back roads.
Wherever you go, for one whole day, just take the backroads. Long time Connecticut residents likely do this everyday, but if you haven't had a chance to enjoy those winding tree covered roads, this is the perfect day to start. Less traffic and more scenery makes it a much better way to see the state. Find some great backroads here.
2. Go shopping on Main Street.
Just about every town has a Main Street lined with shops and even a few restaurants. This is unique to New England and one of the many reasons folks call out state "classic," "nostalgic," and "stuck in time." It's a relaxing start to the day and always fun. Find the best Main Streets in Connecticut here.
3. Visit the state capital.
No state visit is complete without heading to the center of it all. Play frisbee in Bushnell Park, or tour the state building and discover some oddities. Grand and beautiful buildings paired with lots of history makes this a must do activity. Find more activities you can do in the capital here.
4. Visit a historic house.
Whether it's the home of a historical figure or just your town's historical society, these historic houses are always filled with incredible insights in to the past. No history buff can resist the photo collections and intriguing stories that are waiting for them here. Find more houses here.
5. Grab a slice of pizza for lunch.
If possible, pair it with a birch soda. If you're down on the Gold Coast opt for the apizza of course and enjoy the thin crust magic. New York gets a lot of hype but everyone knows that Connecticut makes the best pizza around. Find the best pizza places here.
6. Head to the water.
I'm a beach bum myself, but with natural lazy rivers, spring fed lakes and waterfall swimming holes there's a little something for everyone to be found here. CT residents love splashing around, especially in the heat of the summer. This is a great way to let loose after a day of exploring. Find beaches, lakes, and waterfalls here.
7. Get a warm lobster roll for dinner.
If you're at the water, chances are you aren't too far from a clam shack. Connecticut is known for its unique approach to the lobster roll and this meal has become iconic to our state. You can't step foot in the state without trying one, especially from Abbott's! Find clam shacks here.
8. Enjoy some homemade ice cream.
Connecticut has an awesome ice cream scene that only continues to grow. But their best spots still believe in making homemade ice cream daily, and may even let you pet the cows who provide the milk. But it doesn't matter if you opt for the farm or head somewhere a little closer to town. It's always delicious. Check out the ice cream trail here.
9. Watch the sunset.
Connecticut is known for having some of the most epic sunsets. There are many scenic overlooks throughout the state, including piers and boardwalks, that make it easy to get an amazing view from both the land and the sea. It's the best way to end your day trip, as it relaxes and humbles you.
