Whether you've been hiking throughout the winter months or you and your family are making spring and summer hiking plans, you'll want to give a second look to the Salmon River Trail Loop in Salmon River State Forest near the town of Colchester.
Whether you are a beginner or an expert hiker, you will enjoy the hike through this simple, yet moderate trail starting from Day Pond. This is the perfect trail for those days when you want to commune with nature and enjoy the fresh air or take the family out for a little bit of exploration without overexerting yourself.
Most of the trail is well marked with red or blue blazes along the way. Although you will need to be aware of the slight incline and rocky terrain along the trail, this is the perfect place for a family hike. Children and the family dog will enjoy the fun of exploration this hike has to offer. You'll also find plenty of shade along the way to rest in.
Just off the main trail, you will be able to find the small, yet beautiful running waterfalls. This is the perfect area to take a small picnic break and listen to the tranquil sounds of the waterfalls and the forest.
After the local rains and winter runoff, this area does get muddy and slippery. As always, you'll want to prepare for anything. Many hikers who have taken this hike say that bug repellant is definitely a must-have.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Here at Only In Connecticut, we love a good lengthy all-day trek. We've got tons of amazing trails in the Nutmeg State, and we're firm believers that everyone should work their way up to exploring them all! There's so many options for those who want to enjoy long hikes that span 10 miles or more. With that being said, shorter hikes are important to feature, too, and they can certainly be just as fun. We realize that not everybody is capable of a multi-mile hike, and sometimes it feels good to just try something easy. If you're looking for a short easy trail in Granby, CT that still boasts some amazing views, we think you'll love the Westledge Cascades Trail in the McLean Game Refuge. Check it out:

The McLean Game Refuge is a 4,400-acre nature preserve in Granby with 20 miles of hiking trails to enjoy. It's a great spot for birdwatching and immersing yourself in nature.
There are plenty of longer trails here, but the Westledge Cascades Trail measures barely over a quarter mile and is perfect for anyone seeking a short adventure.
Hiking off-trail is strictly prohibited here, so make sure that you stay on the blazed trails at all times.

All kinds of critters live in this beautiful preserve, and you never know what sort of wildlife you'll spot, so keep your eyes peeled.
