Colorado is famous for its Old West, gold mining, and railroad histories, all of which can be experienced in several different places around the Centennial State. Isn't it grand? While these are all important parts of state history and deserve to be explored, there are other aspects of history - as well as historical attractions - that are often overlooked, including the unique Mancos Common Press in Colorado.
Located in the small southwestern Colorado town of Mancos, the Mancos Common Press is a hands-on center with a mission to "restore, revitalize, and reuse the historic Mancos Times-Tribune building as an arts and education center."
Housed in the original 1900’s newspaper shop, the Mancos Common Press is a must-visit for readers, writers, and history buffs alike, as the press has been restored to its near-original glory and gives guests a chance to witness the hard work that went into old-time print.
Founded in 2013, the purpose of the Mancos Common Press - which is funded in part by the History Colorado State Historical Fund - is to restore and preserve this part of history and give others the chance to see and use the old machinery.
Do you want to see and try out an old printing press for yourself? Then the Mancos Common Press is the place to be, as they host several programs, including public school classes, community classes, and an artist in residence program.
If you choose to take one of the community classes, you will be introduced to the letterpress process and will also be taught how to combine letterpress with other graphic art forms.
When you visit the Mancos Common Press, be sure to also check out the building's stunning mural, which depicts the Mancos Times Cranston during its heyday.
