The pristinely blue Hanging Lake. The elusive Medano Creek. Seven Falls. What do all of these incredible waters have in common? They are in Colorado, of course! In addition to these, our very own Animas River was just named one of the best in the country. Here is why (and why you will want to visit ASAP):
"From fast-paced, winding tributaries to channels that cut through dramatic and deep canyons, America has an abundance of stunning rivers," begins loveEXPLORING's list of America's most beautiful rivers, which names the Animas River as one of the best!
Spanning 126 miles, the Animas River is a tributary of the San Juan River and part of the Colorado River System and flows through the remarkable San Juan Mountains.
Starting in the San Juan Mountains and ending in Farmington, New Mexico, the Animas River is not only beautiful to look at but ideal for watersports a la white river rafting, fishing, stand-up paddleboarding, and much more.
If you are interested in photography, be sure to bring your camera, as there are plenty of unique photo opportunities along the Animas River.
While you can always visit the Animas River by car or boat, we highly recommend seeing it by train, as the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad runs right alongside it!
As if you needed another reason to visit and love this stunning river, it also passes through (and around) some of our favorite Colorado towns, including - you guessed it! - Durango and Silverton.
To learn more about the Animas River, please visit the Durango Parks and Recreation website.
