What if I told you that you can still get the old General Store experience right here in Colorado? It's true! Here are nine of these charming general stores that will leave you feeling nostalgic:
1. Byers General Store
This one-stop-shop along the I-70 corridor offers everything from groceries to fresh cut flowers, dry cleaning, and more!
2. Twin Lakes General Store
Quite possibly the most picturesque mountain general store, Twin Lakes has a long history of helping both prospectors and tourists alike. Open seasonally, the General Store offers food, gas, and even mail drops.
3. Silver Plume General Store (Pitkin)
While the town itself may be small (Population: >100), the quaint General Store provides lodging, supplies and even UTV rentals to adventure seekers.
4. Gold Hill General Store and Cafe
Located just 10 miles north of Boulder, the town of Gold Hill was the first mining camp in Colorado. The gold rush itself maybe long over, but you can still buy locally made crafts, groceries and delicious homemade meals at this Colorado treasure.
5. Al-Mart General Store (Alma)
The highest general store in North America (10,578 feet above sea level) sells camping gear, clothes and Colorado grown meats and produce.
6. Glen Haven General Store
Speaking from personal experience, Glen Haven's cinnamon rolls are by far the greatest thing you'll ever taste. Before you visit, keep in mind that this general store is closed seasonally during the winter and reopens in May.
7.The Clark Store
This ain't your mamma's general store--The Clark Store houses a deli, coffee house, liquor store and post office all in one.
8. Freeman's General Store (Creede)
Don't let the vintage sign fool you; Freeman's is home to some of the best burgers and ice cream in the state! It's also open seasonally so call before you go! The phone number is (719) 658-2954.
9. St. Elmo General Store (Nathrop)
The once bustling and busy town of St. Elmo is no more, but several of the homes and buildings are still standing, including this charming General Store, which now houses antiques, snack foods and rentals. It's open seasonally between Mother's Day weekend through the last Sunday of September.
