Are you looking for a charming college town in Colorado to visit? If so, then you'll love Durango. This mid-sized town of around 20,000 year-round residents is also home to a few thousand Fort Lewis College students at any given time. The combination of this town's interesting Old West history with the vibrant contributions of enthusiastic college students makes Durango - in our opinion, at least - a very special place indeed.
Durango is a great little city in the southwestern part of Colorado.
It's also home to Fort Lewis College, a four-year, public, liberal arts college.
This college began as a military fort and later became an Indian boarding school before becoming a public college.
This college is unique in that nearly half of its students are Native Americans, and they represent nearly 185 American Indian Tribes. Qualified Native Americans get a tuition-free education at this college due to its history, and 16% of the baccalaureate degrees awarded to Native American students are awarded to graduates of Fort Lewis College.
It's a fairly small school with an enrollment of under 4,000 students, but the school offers many popular majors including business, management, marketing, social sciences, recreation, biomedical sciences, and education, to name a few.
Durango has so much to offer its residents and visitors. One of the most well-known attractions here is the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
If you visit this area, don't miss it.
