What area code in Arkansas are you representing? Is it 501, 870, or 479? Regardless of which one you use, a new code is coming to our state. That’s right folks, if you haven’t heard, by 2025, we will run out of numbers for the 870 area code, which covers the northern, eastern, and southern regions in Arkansas. Read on to find out more about the new code and how it will impact the way you make calls.

Beginning on January 19th, 2024, towns like El Dorado, Pine Bluff, Mountain Home, Texarkana, Jonesboro, Magnolia, Monticello, and more, will be getting a new area code.

Currently, the area code for these cities is 870, but the new code will be 327. There are 2 other area codes in Arkansas, 479 and 501, which serve NWA and central Arkansas, respectively. There will be no change for folks in this region.

The Arkansas Public Service Commission announced that by 2025, the state will run out of 870 numbers. But don't worry folks, if you currently live in one of the impacted cities, you can keep your current number.

However, after January 19, you'll be required to dial all 10 digits to make an outgoing local call. And by February, the new telephone lines will be installed to issue the new 327 phone numbers.

This plan to add a new area code was first introduced in 2009, but the transition was delayed until now due to extra efforts taken to conserve existing numbers.

To be honest, most folks use a cell phone, so I believe the new area code will be an easy transition. However, you may need to reprogram some of your devices like fax machines or possibly numbers in your contact list to adjust for the 10-digit dialing.

Plus, some folks have been using the 10-digit dialing system since last July, so they should be ready for the new change to come.

From 1947 until 2002, there were only 3 area codes in Arkansas, and chances are, after the implementation of the fourth area code, it will be some time before we get another one.
