Tucked away at the foothills of the Ozarks is the tiny town of Cushman Arkansas. And it’s home to Blowing Cave, one of the most fascinating caverns in the state.
This mysterious cave is open seasonally, and on select Sundays during the year, you can freely explore the cavern, or better yet, you can opt for a private guided tour.
Unlike some of the other well-known caves in Arkansas, don’t expect to see paved surfaces or man-made structures. This is a wild cave and if you plan to tour, be sure that you are capable of spelunking.
You’ll be crawling through tight spaces as well as through standing water. So, be prepared to get geared up and ready for the journey.
And what an exciting journey it will be. The legend of Blowing Cave dates back to the 1950’s and the lore keeps visitors flocking to the site.
Legend has it that this mysterious hidden gem has otherworldly human-like beings dwelling on the inside.
Though no one has actually reported seeing these beings in recent years, the folklore is still fascinating and adds to the intrigue of the cave. Additionally, the cavern is also known for its many nocturnal creatures including bats, centipedes, as well as the legendary Albino salamander.
The cave has many crevices to explore, and you’ll be especially blown away by the magnificent underground waterfall. Once you’re done exploring, you’ve probably worked up an appetite.
Of course, on this cave-themed day trip, it’s only fitting that you grab a bite to eat in nearby Cave City Arkansas. Established in 1892, this underrated small town was built around a large underground cave, hence the name.
One of the main attractions in town, the Crystal River Cave as well as the mysterious river that runs through it, operated as part of the oldest motor court in Arkansas.
Recently, the motor court and cave reopened for tours, so be sure to visit while you're here. The charming town of Cave City is a great place to visit, with its claim to fame as having the "world’s sweetest watermelons" and celebrates with a festival every year.
Surely, this small town also has delicious restaurants, and one of which is Buttercup's Kitchen. It's a family-owned restaurant that has amazing desserts.
And the menu is filled with all kinds of favorites from down-home comfort food to burgers, sandwiches, wraps, and more.
Best of all, you’ll be rubbing elbows with the locals, so sit back and enjoy the stories about the infamous cave and mysterious river underneath the town.
