Abandoned businesses are the fading ghosts of cities. Some are foreboding eyesores that shriek out at the passing cars but others are more subtle. The building still stands but ghost is a melancholy one. The abandoned roller rink in Conway is a tragic tale that stands out from any typical failed business story. This rink still clings to its happy memories as the remnants gather more dust.
Please know that as we skate down memory lane that these photos were taken with permission. Conway Roller Rink has been deemed unsafe and hazardous. The area is patrolled by law enforcement.
This is the Conway Roller Rink.
Here are the remnants of what’s inside.
It was built in 1973 as Conway’s recreational areas began to develop.
The rink was popular while it was opened.
Although it competed with the bowling alley next door, the rink became the favorite spot for locals.
It was mostly known as a hangout for college kids.
Different events brought huge crowds and the rink stayed busy.
Tragedy caused the rink to close.
Larry Billings, the owner, was shot and killed in his home in 2012.
Larry was beloved by the town. The handprints on the building were made as a memorial to him.
Ownership went to his wife and son. They decided to close the rink indefinitely.
Here’s to hoping the rink will be resurrected into another family fun center filled with new fond memories.
