If you've lived in Arizona for a long time, it can be easy to take the scenery for granted. Next time you need a little reminder of why our state is so uniquely beautiful, hop on State Route 89A and follow it from Sedona to Flagstaff. In under 15 miles, you'll see rugged canyons, lush cliffsides, and the gentle babble of the iconic Oak Creek as its meandering current leads the way.
The portion of State Route 89A that runs between Flagstaff and Sedona is often described as one of the most scenic drives in Arizona, and it's easy to understand why.
Spanning just 14 miles, the breathtaking journey leads from Red Rock Country all the way to the top of the Mogollon Rim - with plenty to see and do along the way.
Before hopping in the car, get your camera ready and head to Oak Creek Canyon Vista.
This popular overlook provides expansive views of the canyon, and you can also buy handmade Native American goods from local vendors.
You'll descend a series of winding switchbacks that showcase the beautiful scenery like you've never seen it before.
Evergreen ponderosa pines line the cliffsides, and the iconic rust-colored canyon walls tickle the clouds with their rugged peaks.
Hiking opportunities abound, so you'll have no shortage of options to stretch your legs.
Admire the renowned Midgely Bridge from a lookout point, or take a stroll down to the creek on the Huckaby Trail. Since the drive is so short, it's easy to squeeze a hike in - even if it takes a few hours to complete.
Arizona's favorite outdoor playground, Slide Rock State Park, is also located along the route.
Situated on a half-mile stretch of Oak Creek, this historic park features an 80-foot-long natural waterslide that people come from all over the world to experience. Don't forget your swimsuit!
So, if you're looking to fall in love with Arizona all over again, it's hard to beat the Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive.
It's short, sweet, and quite possibly one of the most memorable adventures you'll ever have.
