We all know Arizona is rife with unique architecture, but very few people know a chain restaurant has made it onto the list. The Souper Salad in Phoenix was once a bank, its conical roof turning heads from miles away. See for yourself:
Formerly Western Savings and Loan, the building now occupied by this popular chain is one of the most unique structures in Metro Phoenix. It was built in 1975 by architect W.A. Sarmiento, who intended for the bank's ribbed conical tower to be visible from I-17.
Inside, it's hard to tell the restaurant was anything else in a past life. Oh, the power of a paint job and some lighthearted decor!
A once-over of the massive salad bar will leave you salivating. Far as the eye can see, over 30 crisp veggies and other fun toppings allow for a completely customizable dining experience. Pasta, potato, and premade tossed salads such as apple pecan throw some different textures and flavor profiles into the mix.
Don't be shy about loading up several plates and bowls - it is an all-you-can-eat buffet! Make sure to grab a bowl of soup, as the selections are truly mouthwatering. The lineup for this month includes chicken enchilada, spicy meatball, twice baked potato, and several other hearty, warming varieties.
Bring your tray into the vast seating area and find a booth or table your group will be comfortable in. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows are one of the only reminders that the eatery once served a very different purpose.
Flatbread pizzas and freshly-baked cornbread, garlic breadsticks, and Spice Rack Gingerbread bring some carby goodness to the table. Unlike some buffets that neglect to replace food as it gets cold, Souper Salad ensures everything is hot and ready at all times. Don't believe us? Just check out how blissfully melty that cheese is.
Among the more unique offerings are build-your-own nachos and a baked potato bar.
At least try to save a little room for dessert. Strawberry shortcake, loaded ice cream sundaes, and chocolate mousse end your meal the right way: on a sweet note.
