Making the drive between Flagstaff and Sedona anytime soon? You'll want to be sure to stop off at this amazing little overlook before you drop down or climb out of the canyon (depending upon which direction you're headed). The overlook park has spectacular long range views of the Coconino National Forest and more surprises in store too. Take a peek below.
Arizona's 89A runs approximately 30 miles to connect the two cities of Flagstaff and Sedona. And while you could just power right through those 30-ish miles without a care, you could stop and stretch your legs and admire the view...
At almost exactly the halfway point, you'll encounter Oak Creek Vista, a scenic overlook park that doles out close-up views of the canyon. The mostly paved walkway leads to a variety of viewpoints to see the canyon below and, during certain seasons, more green on the landscape than you can possibly imagine!
See for yourself!
The overlook has even more to see if you venture off the pavement and take the loop trail that veers off to the right. Follow the path and discover a delightful view of the switchbacks on the road that climbs out of the canyon!
Most people headed out of the canyon have already passed quite a few overlooks and may, by default, just pass this one right on by since it's not a pull off on the edge of the road.
Look for the sign, turn in, and drive a few hundred yards to the parking area — and then let the adventure begin!
During most seasons, Oak Creek Vista features Native American vendor booths where you can stop to see and purchase pottery, jewelry, blankets and more. Enjoy looking at the wares and chatting with the vendors on your way in, and then on your way out, stop and make your purchases.
Have you stopped at this cool canyon overlook in between Flagstaff and Sedona? We'd love to know!
Oak Creek Vista Overlook is located on AZ-89A, halfway between Sedona and Flagstaff, Arizona. It's open 365 days a year from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Native American vendor booths may not always be present. Be advised, there are restroom facilities at the overlook, but they are porta potty type even though they're in buildings. Get more information from the official website of the U.S. Forest Service. (Note, this page of the Forest Service website currently states the overlook was closed in October for paving. The overlook is open now and the site just needs updating.)
