I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
Do you want to feel like you’re worlds away while remaining in the state of Arizona? Heading out to any one of our remote destinations, which are aplenty in our state, by the way, can do the trick. Without all the distraction, the noise, and the bother, a day trip to Blue Ridge Reservoir, a remote reservoir in Arizona, may be just what you need to escape.
Located near Payson in Happy Jack within the Coconino National Forest is a remote reservoir you should visit if you're looking to escape for a day.
This is the C.C. Cragin Reservoir, more commonly known as the Blue Ridge Reservoir. While it looks more like a river with its serpentine curves through the forested canyon, it is indeed a lake.
One activity that may be of interest to you for a peaceful afternoon is fishing. The lake is stocked with trout by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Just sit lakeside or take a boat out on the water with your fishing gear and enjoy the peaceful feeling as it washes over you.
The lake has a boat launch. Non-motorized boats are allowed so feel free to launch a kayak or canoe from here. You can also bring a single-engine motorized boat under 10 horsepower.
Wildlife watching and mountain biking are other activities visitors like to do when they come here. When you spend time at Blue Ridge Reservoir, it will be time well-spent.

Suppose you’re worried about having no cell phone service while in a remote destination; a satellite device like the SPOT X can give you that peace of mind you’re looking for. You can purchase one from our friends at REI!
