We Arizonans are no stranger to sweltering temperatures, but it has been ridiculously hot outside lately -- even for the desert. Last week, an Excessive Heat Warning rendered conditions in the Phoenix, Yuma, and Grand Canyon areas similar to those of Death Valley: the hottest place in the U.S.
Excessive Heat Warnings have been the norm lately in the Phoenix, Yuma, and Grand Canyon areas, and a significant reprieve doesn't seem likely any time soon.
As of Sunday, July 19, afternoon temperatures were reaching well into the 110s -- nothing terribly unusual for this time of year, but still important to keep an eye on.
Monsoon season, which runs from June through September, is accompanied by dust storms, lightning, flash flooding, strong winds, hail, and -- you guessed it -- unrelenting heat.
Although the rain has a slight cooling effect, it doesn't take long for temperatures to start creeping up again after a deluge.
Last week, the weather in Phoenix was comparable to that of Death Valley, California: the hottest place in the U.S.
Temperatures soared up to a scorching nearly 120 degrees, the intense heat permeating every inch of the city.
Yuma wasn't spared from the onslaught, either. Though not quite as sweltering as the Capital City, it still endured triple digit highs for multiple days in a row.
As is typical with Arizona summers, 100+ degree days will likely persist for the next couple months.
Although we can't alter the course of nature, there are precautions that can help you stay comfortable and safe.
Don't go hiking in midday, and avoid strenuous activity even in the morning or evening hours.
Cancel all outdoor activities if possible, and spend most of your time in air-conditioned buildings.
Stay hydrated -- even if you aren't thirsty. Check in with family and friends, and call 911 immediately if an emergency arises.
