Start in downtown Talkeetna and head toward the river. The Talkeeetna Riverfront Park, a pastoral spot, is just down the road. There are areas for both long-term and informal camping and day-use near the river.
Head across this dynamic truss bridge for a thrilling experience. There is a 4-foot wide path away from the rails for pedestrians and four-wheelers.
The Talkeetna Railroad Bridge stretches across the mighty Talkeetna River. This cold river carries run-off from the Talkeetna Glacier in the Talkeetna Mountains approx. 85 miles to the mouth of the river near the Talkeetna Riverfront Park.
Finished in 1923, this bridge has stood the test of time and continues to be sturdy and solid for the Alaska Railroad. The Parks Highway wasn't built until 1971, so there were many years when the railroad was the primary way to transit Alaska.
Walk past the bridge down the beach to the point. From there you can continue along the shore or set up and fish for a while like the locals do.
