Located in the tiny town of Skagway, Alaska is the incredible White Pass & Yukon Route Railway.
Known as "Alaska’s Scenic Railway of the World," this incredible railroad is over a hundred years old. It was built within a year, reaching 20.4 miles up to White Pass Summit.
It was built to help the gold rush miners who took the White Pass or Chilkoot hike to summit the mountain passes, trying to get to the Yukon in Canada.
What was once a toiling trip that took the lives of men and horses alike, now became an easy journey of just three hours aboard the train. This incredible railroad was finally completed in 1900.
The railroad goes from sea level at Skagway, and over 20 miles ascends over 3,000 feet at the summit.
The train travels over steep 3.9% grades along tight curves. The curves of the track are made possible as it's a narrow gauge railroad.
The views along the way are absolutely spectacular.
You’ll pass Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point, and Dead Horse Gulch along the way to White Pass Summit. Have your camera handy, because you won’t want to miss out on these views.
There are a number of different excursions to take on the railroad, but our favorite, and the most popular, is the White Pass Summit Excursion.
