With Friday the 13th just one week away, we figured it would be the perfect time to tell a little ghost story. If you are feeling extra adventurous, you can start your weekend getaway planning now that you have this list of six haunted hotels in Alaska that will make your stay a nightmare. Well, maybe. We have a sneaking suspicion that even if they are haunted, they are probably still filled with incredible Alaskan hospitality that overshadows all that other spooky stuff.
1. Historic Anchorage Hotel – Anchorage
Guests have reported seeing multiple children, a woman in a white dress and some even believe that the first Chief of Police of Anchorage who was killed nearby haunts the hotel. Lots of speculation, but are you brave enough to stay? Aside from all the ghost stories, this is a beautiful historic hotel in downtown Anchorage with incredible staff who treat their guests like family.
2. Gakona Lodge and Trading Post – Gakona
Guests who have stayed here have reported hearing footsteps and smelling wafts of tobacco smoke out of nowhere. But aside from that, this beautiful log cabin style lodge is actually the oldest operating roadhouse in Alaska. Maybe that's why it has the ghost stories, because it's been around so long. Spooky? Meh, we think it's just gorgeously historic. Guests can go salmon fishing and eat incredible food while staying here.
3. Silverbow Inn Bed & Breakfast – Juneau
Happy spirits are our favorite kind. So, this Inn is actually known for its bakery (which was founded by Austrian Gus Messerschmidt in 1898). The bakery has since closed its doors, but many visitors have reported that after Gus passed away in 1938, his friendly spirit was said to be seen and felt during the morning time in both the hotel and bakery. Now that is cool! Donuts really do have magical powers!
4. Golden North Hotel – Skagway
Built in 1898, the Golden North Hotel is one of the oldest operating hotels in the last frontier. One of the rooms (room #23) in the hotel is said to be haunted by a woman who died in it during the gold rush days. Many refer to this ghost as Mary. The hotel actually charges a higher fee to stay in that room, according to reports. Room #14 at the hotel has also been said to have strange rays of light that gleam through it as ghost spirits are felt. Pretty cool and pretty eerie at the same time.
5. Tonsina River Lodge – Cooper Center
In room #18, a playful spirit by the name of Charlie has been said by staff and visitors to live here. Although no one knows the real story behind it, many speculate that Charlie was either shot by the police or hung himself in this room after being turned down by a loved one. Aside from the silly ghost story, Tonsina River Lodge is a gorgeous little piece of Alaskan paradise. Visitors can enjoy some of the best hospitality in the state, gorgeous Aurora Borealis sightings, free wi-fi and amazing food from the restaurant.
6. Van Gilder Hotel – Seward
This quaint and cozy hotel built in 1916 is located in the historic district, convenient to just about everything in Seward. Some locals say that a gal by the name of Fannie, who passed away in the 1950's at the hotel, just never left. She is said to haunt room #209. Other than the ghost story, this charming hotel was actually placed on the National Register of Historical Places in 1980. It is filled with incredible staff, a full library and authentic Victorian charm.
Have you ever stayed at any of these haunted hotels? If you haven't, are you brave enough to do it?
