If you’re looking for a restaurant with a history of delivering some of the best food in the state, you need to visit the oldest restaurant in Alaska. The White Spot Cafe, located right in downtown Anchorage, has been around since at least 1959. And filled with classic comfort food, this is a must-see if you’re looking for a little slice of Alaska history.
As Alaska is a young state, there aren’t many restaurants that can claim they’ve been around since before statehood.
Mr. White opened the White Spot Cafe as early as 1946, and it’s possible it was even as early as 1941, according to its current owner. To date, the White Spot Cafe has had five amazing owners bringing it through the decades to today.
While the open date is debatable, the great food is not.
There’s a reason why customers come back year after year, decade after decade. The diner has a cozy feel that keeps people coming back to order their favorite meals.
The most popular item on the menu? The Halibut Sandwich.
Served with fries or onion rings, it’s a dish that keeps the regulars coming back again and again. Even Food & Wine Magazine and USA Today both call the Halibut Sandwich the must-have sandwich in Alaska.
Besides their excellent lunch and dinner menu is a great breakfast spread.
Well stocked with a variety of items, you can find all of your favorite breakfast comfort foods. Omelets, chicken fried steak, even reindeer hash! They aim to please and they hit the target spot on.
If you have room, make sure you order dessert.
You’ll find old-time classics like hand-dipped shakes and malts, root beer or Coca Cola floats, and their famous Brownie Sundae. Everything is served in generous portion sizes, and everything is extremely tasty!
While many wouldn’t call a diner a culinary masterpiece, we know better.
When you do food as well as The White Spot Cafe, and are around longer than the state itself, you earn the title. And we think they deserve it!
