Alabama boasts many small towns that are filled with lots of history. Of course, towns like these also have several historic buildings located throughout them. One town in particular is Tuscumbia. Tuscumbia is a small, historic town that's located in Northwest Alabama. It's also the seat of Colbert County.
Incorporated in 1820, Tuscumbia, which has less than 10,000 residents, is also one of Alabama's oldest towns.
Because of Tuscumbia's age, the town is filled with many historic buildings, including the county's beautiful courthouse. The Colbert County Courthouse was built in 1881 and rebuilt in 1908 following a horrific fire.
Ivy Green is another historic building in Tuscumbia. It's the birthplace of Helen Keller and was built in 1820. People have traveled from all over the U.S., and even world, to tour this historic home.
While driving through Tuscumbia's downtown area, you've probably notice the small log cabin on South Dickson Street. This is the historic Coldwater Stagecoach Stop, which was built between the years 1815-1820. Today, it houses a collection of frontier articles, which can be viewed by appointment. (256-383-0783)
Tuscumbia is also home to the historic Tuscumbia Depot. In fact, Tuscumbia is known as "America's First Frontier Railroad Town." Today, this 1888 depot is operated as a museum.
And finally, if you love the charm of historic homes, you'll definitely want to visit Belle Mont Mansion the next time you're in Tuscumbia. Even though this beautiful home, which was built in 1828, is located just outside of Tuscumbia, it's still worth a tour. After all, it's considered one of Alabama's most beautiful historic homes.
