Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve is a stunningly beautiful, 1,000-acre piece of land in Birmingham, Alabama, and if you are looking to get outside for an adventure with your dogs, (or just go somewhere where you can observe other dogs), this is the place to be. Once home to a major mining operation, this area wasn't always this green. But, when the mines were shut in the 1950s, trees, plants, and wildlife quickly moved back into the area, making it the lovely place it is today.
The preserve is open Tuesday through Sunday. It opens at 7 a.m. every day but closes at either 5 p.m. or 7 p.m. depending on the season, so make sure you check before you head out there.
The trails that wind through the nature preserve are perfect for walking your dog. While there is no mountain biking or horseback riding allowed in the park, hiking and trail running are popular here, so be sure to keep a close eye on your dog.
Your dog is guaranteed to love the long meandering trails full of fresh scents for them to explore.
When you and your dog are exploring, remember that you are not alone! Lots of wildlife such as raccoons, coyotes, snakes, birds, and foxes can be found in the preserve. Be sure to let them be!
These manmade structures are commonly used by bats in the park. The brown bat and tri-colored bat are popular in the park, and can often be seen around dusk.
One of the most popular trails is the Overlook Trail via Quarry Trail. At just under 3 miles, the trail isn't too long and the views are definitely worth it.
There is so much to see and explore here, it is easy to always find a new area of the preserve. You and your dog will surely enjoy your time here.
The Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve is a little gem located in a big city. Whether it's you or your dog that needs a break from the big city and a walk in the woods, this is the perfect place that you both will surely love.
