Alabama is home to hundreds of recorded caves. In fact, the Yellowhammer State has one of the highest densities of caves in the United States. Cavers come from all across the country, and even world, to explore our caves. One Alabama cave that everyone should explore at least once is Rickwood Caverns, which you can read all about below.
Rickwood Caverns is a cave that's located near Warrior, Alabama. It's also the main attraction at Rickwood Caverns State Park.
This massive cave features illuminated limestone formations that are believed to be more than 260 million years old. They're truly amazing!
Because fossils of marine life and numerous shell fragments have been discovered inside Rickwood Caverns, many people believe the cave was carved from an ocean bed.
People of all ages are invited to tour Rickwood Caverns, which will lead visitors approximately 175 feet below the earth.
The tours are offered daily at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. The admission prices are as follows: Ages 13+, $17.50; Ages 5-12, $8.00, Ages under 5, FREE with parent or guardian. For group rates, be sure to call the park's office at 205-647-9692.
To experience something incredibly unique this Christmas season, you'll want to visit Santa's Underground Workshop, which will take place inside Rickwood Caverns from December 1st to December 23rd (2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.). The cave will be decked out with Christmas lights and whimsical decor. Even Santa himself will be there. The admission price will be $10 per person. Children 3 and under are FREE.
