Many unique towns help make up the great state of Alabama. Among them is Monroeville, which has grown into one of America's most unique towns. For information about Monroeville, including a few of the places that make it such a unique town to visit, take a look below.
Monroeville is the county seat of Monroe County and is one of Alabama's most charming small towns. It's also the perfect destination for a day trip.
Founded in 1899, this historic town, which is known as the "Literary Capital of Alabama," welcomes countless literary fans each year from across the country and around the world. One of the many reasons why is because Monroeville is the hometown of Harper Lee, the award-winning novelist of "To Kill a Mockingbird."
Monroeville's most popular attraction is the Old Monroe County Courthouse, which is now operated as a museum.
What makes this courthouse truly special is its courtroom, which was the inspiration for the courtroom scenes in "To Kill a Mockingbird." Harper Lee's father, A.C. Lee, also practiced law in this very courtroom.
Another place that's worth checking out while in Monroeville is the Old Bank Building, which housed the former office of Harper Lee's Father.
While exploring this historic town, you'll encounter several wall murals. Art is very important to the community, and these giant paintings are spectacular!
There are a few places to eat at while in Monroeville, including Mel's Dairy Dream. From burgers and hot dogs, to shakes and sundaes, this iconic restaurant offers something for everyone.
Located next door to Mel's Dairy Dream is where the historic Faulk House once stood. This is where Truman Capote, a world-renowned author, spent many childhood summers.
Before your day trip comes to an end, you'll want to visit Whitey Lee Park. While at this 20-acre park, you'll be able to participate in a variety of activities such as picnicking under the pavilion, fishing from the lake, feeding the ducks, and walking along the trail.
