Alabama's Horton Mill Covered Bridge is located off the beaten path in the small town of Oneonta. Throughout the year, it receives numerous visitors from near and far.
Constructed in 1934, this historic covered bridge is one of three in Blount County, which is often referred to as the "Covered Bridge Capital of Alabama." Blount County is also home to the annual Covered Bridge Festival.
Spanning the Calvert Prong of the Little Warrior River, the Horton Mill Covered Bridge measures approximately 220 feet in length.
Although its length is quite impressive, what makes this covered bridge stand out from other covered bridges is its height of 70 feet.
Due to this particular height, the Horton Mill Covered Bridge is the highest covered bridge spanning over any U.S. waterway.
Another unique feature of the Horton Mill Covered Bridge is that it's open to traffic. Many covered bridges aren't. If you decide to drive across this covered bridge, keep in mind that it's only one lane and the speed limit is 5 MPH.
