Winter in Alabama is blessedly mild compared to many other parts of the country, and for that reason, many homegrown Alabamians aren't fans of snow and ice. But that doesn't take away the fact that the state is beautiful during the winter season! From frozen waterfalls around Alabama to snow-dusted parks, trails, and gorges, here are 10 spots in the Cotton State that reflect the state's beauty when it's covered in frosty beauty:
1. Pisgah Gorge
Pisgah Gorge, located in the small picturesque town of Pisgah, is one of Alabama's most beautiful natural areas. It's a wonderful place to visit during the winter months.
2. Little River Canyon National Preserve
Little River Canyon National Preserve is such a BEAUTIFUL place during winter! While you may not see a ton of snow, you WILL find some frosty scenes, some fog, and a whole lot of icy blues to admire.
3. Noccalula Falls Park
Noccalula Falls, located in Gadsden, is absolutely incredible during the winter season, but don't miss the fantastic sights hiding around the falls too!
4. Caney Creek Falls
Located within the Bankhead National Forest, Caney Creek Falls produces some of the most lovely icicles during the cold winter months! It's also one of the few frozen waterfalls in Alabama that actually has potential to ice over. You'll see this waterfall, plus a few more, in one of the videos below.
5. Birmingham Botanical Gardens
While you might not find any frozen wonders at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, you WILL find a plethora of gorgeous, wintry sights - both during and after the holidays.
6. Cheaha State Park
A view from Cheaha Mountain (Alabama's highest natural point) during the winter season can't be beat. Absolutely BREATHTAKING! Of course, strolling through a winter wonderland at eye-level is pretty fantastic too.
Mize Mill Falls, Bankhead National Forest
Truth be told, ALL of Alabama's waterfalls look pretty fantastic in winter! Check out those icicles at Mize Mill! This hidden gem is a must-see.
8. Vulcan Park and Museum
Alabama's historical sites and museums may not seem like the perfect place to enjoy the winter scenery, but the grounds at these spots - like here at the Vulcan - are always magical.
9.DeSoto Falls
These wintry frozen falls are so stunning, we thought a closeup was needed too! DeSoto is a petite beauty, but well worth a winter adventure.
10. Monte Sano State Park
Can this postcard-perfect scene of the Japanese bridge at Monte Sano during get any more dreamy? This idyllic state park boasts year-round beauty (as seen below), but a heavy winter snow looks phenomenal!
