Tucked away in Western Maryland’s Allegany County is a camping destination that’s available year-round: Rocky Gap State Park. This treasure trove of scenery, wildlife, and opportunities for adventure encompasses over 3,000 acres of public land. And, it might just be one of the most special places to go camping in Maryland. Here’s more on why you’ll want to pack up your camping gear and head to Rocky Gap Campground in Maryland.
Welcome to Rocky Gap! Far from a hidden gem, this state park is one of the most popular in the region -- and for good reason.
The crown jewel of the park is Lake Habeeb, which has been referred to as the bluest lake in Maryland. It's fed by Rocky Gap Run, which meanders through an awe-inspiring gorge of sheer cliffs and dense hemlock forests.
In addition to water activities, the park offers a handful of multi-use trails. One of the most popular is the Lakeside Loop Trail, which measures 5.3 miles.
Those looking to extend their stay at this magnificent campground should consider camping for a night or two. The campground offers 278 campsites to choose from in addition to mini cabin and yurt options.
