Here in Idaho, we have several unique and extraordinary state parks to visit and Bruneau Dunes is one of them. Located in Owyhee County in southwest Idaho, this fascinating park is home to incredible sand dunes, unforgettable outdoor recreational opportunities, and a must-visit observatory. Now, it is also home to the newest International Dark Sky Park in Idaho.
Bruneau Dunes State Park has many claims to fame. This 4,800-acre state park is not only one of the best destinations in the state for sandboarding, but it is also home to the tallest free-standing sand dune in North America. This dune is 470 feet tall.
In 2015, the park began inventorying its outdoor lighting and taking meter readings to determine the quality of the night skies above the park. They even received a $20,000 grant to upgrade all outdoor light fixtures to those that were dark sky compliant.
Two of the most powerful public telescopes in Idaho can also be found in Bruneau Dunes. You can look through these telescopes at the Bruneau Dunes Observatory.
The observatory offers tours and solar viewing. The observatory is open seasonally and there is a small fee to use the telescopes for individuals over the age of five. You can learn more about the programs offered at the observatory on the Idaho Parks and Recreation website.
There’s nothing better than ending your day by looking at the starry sky above you. Idaho sure leaves us impressed.
