South Carolina has been home for AnneMarie since 2001. Her favorite part of the state is Lake Jocassee. An App State alumna, it's always the mountains; the lake bonus makes it heavenly. When not writing about the state, she may be spending time with family, relaxing by the pool, or out somewhere enjoying nature.
When life is heavy, taking a day trip in South Carolina is a good way to get a break. Being able to get away to a place that’s not crowded is even better, especially for introverts. With South Carolina being a popular travel destination and the fastest-growing state in America in 2023, it’s becoming more and more difficult to find those types of places. But there are still a few left if you know where to look or if you’re an OnlyInYourState fan! Let’s explore one together now …
At the northeasternmost corner of South Carolina is Waties Island, one of the state's last undeveloped, unspoiled barrier islands. Under the jurisdiction of Coastal Carolina University, it's used primarily for educational research.
An opportunity to explore this island of over 1,400 acres with a three-mile stretch of beach is a unique experience. You really never know what you may come across on a tour, except that it won't include large crowds of people!
You're also likely to see crabs, seagulls, and potentially other wildlife during your day trip adventure. Inland wildlife includes black bears, deer, foxes, hogs, and seasonal bald eagles.
The paddle to and from Waties Island is approximately 45 minutes each direction. For more details, visit the J & L Kayaks website, and be sure you don’t forget your sunscreen!
