One of our favorite ways to spend time is exploring one of the many state parks Maryland has to offer. From waterfront vistas to gently rolling mountains, our state parks offer an impressive array of natural wonders. And today’s feature destination is certainly no exception. Measuring a whopping 18,000 acres, Gunpowder Falls State Park is a treasure trove of natural splendor, activities, and adventures galore. Here’s more on how you can enjoy an incredible outdoor adventure in this magnificent Maryland state park.
Welcome, one and all, to the iconic Gunpowder Falls State Park. Established in 1959 in hopes of protecting both the Gunpowder River and Big Gunpowder Falls, this park is now one of the largest of its kind in the state of Maryland.
The park measures 18,000 acres and is comprised of six unique areas: Hereford Area, Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail, Sweet Air Area, Central Area, Hammerman Area, and the Dundee Creek Marina.
If you're curious to explore the oldest part of the park, head to the Central Area, which includes both the Little and Big Gunpowder Falls. This area also includes the Jerusalem Mill Historic Village.
Those who prefer spending time out on the open water will love the Hammerman Area located in Middle River. With a swimming beach, picnic tables, and playgrounds, it's perfect for all ages.
Perhaps one of the most impressive parts of the park is its variety. From tidal wetlands to rugged slopes, you'll find there's quite a variety to explore.
