Some of us are lucky enough to be born in Washington. Others find this great state later in life. And those who come to the Evergreen State as adults learn quickly that we have a unique culture here, one that is generally regarded as pleasant. Here are a few things our newcomers tend to learn quickly:
1. It doesn’t rain as much as people think (that’s just how we keep people away).
Western Washington certainly sees more rain than the east side, and this winter was especially drizzly… but there are so many cities (Memphis, Nashville, New Orleans) that see more rain annually than any of ours do. But let's keep that between us...
2. Washingtonians LOVE their pets.
Washington has the fifth most cat owners per capita in the country, the most expressed Facebook interest in cats, and there are a bunch of dog-friendly parks, hotels and even restaurants. Our pets are part of the family.
3. The beer and wine are both underrated.
The eastern and central parts of the state have ideal conditions for growing the best hops and grapes, and it shows. Washington produces more hops than any other state and every other country except Germany.
4. You can’t help but be a nature lover here…
When you live in Washington, you’re never far from a beautiful hiking trail, lake, forest, mountain or beach.
5. ...but our beaches are cold.
Our coastal towns stay chilly almost all year, and even when the weather warms up, the water stays cold. They’re still beautiful and fun, but if you’re used to swimming in the ocean, you’ll have to find another way to pass the time you spend seaside.
6. Cannabis is not only legal here but generally accepted.
Not everyone in Washington smokes pot. And unless you’re in certain Seattle neighborhoods, you’re not likely to see much of it. But it’s not taboo to talk about it here, at least with the younger generations. In fact, companies have begun marketing high end edibles to an older and more refined crowd. It's not glorified, it's just not a big deal.
7. Not all of us are sports fans. But when it comes down to it, we will always support our Seahawks, Mariners and Sounders.
We’re loyal like that.
8. The food is incredible.
Washington’s farmers markets are second to none (this is Spokane’s) thanks to the abundance of fresh produce, ethically raised meat, farm fresh eggs and local dairies. We also have amazing restaurants in every town—and if you live in one of our bigger cities, you’ll find practically every imaginable cuisine.
9. We’re not the best drivers...
And we often blame you for that, dear transplant. Native Washingtonians swear they learned how to drive in the rain and snow when they were young ("uphill both ways"…).
10. … but we are the best friends.
It’s true. There are rumors of the "Seattle freeze," meaning our urban locals are friendly until you actually try to hang out with them. The truth is, most of them are just busy (there’s a lot to do here). And when you do manage to befriend some Washingtonians, you’ll find them to be kind, loyal and generous people.
11. We have a little bit of Bavaria right here in Washington.
Leavenworth is our little Alpine village, and it’s absolutely incredible. We also have a Victorian town (Port Townsend) and a Norwegian town (Poulsbo) among others.
12. Our festivals are amazing.
Tulips. Lavender. Apples. Wine. Beer. Seafood. These are just a few of the MANY wonderful things we celebrate with festivals here every year.
13. It’s far from perfect…
Washington has numerous issues that need to be worked out, just like every other state. We won’t sugarcoat things for you and pretend we’re perfect. In fact, give us a chance and we’ll be the first to complain or rant.
14. … but it’s still easy to love.
Washington is beautiful. There’s a lot to do here, and there are a lot of great places to live. Give it a chance and you’ll fall in love with it.
Though we’re admittedly biased, we can’t help but think that Washington is the best state. There’s a lot to love here!
