The beauty that abounds throughout Vermont cannot be put into words; it cannot be captured by photographs either. Thus, even this article is a futile effort to portray Vermont's most beautiful places. But what it can do is offer you the chance to go and see these places for yourselves, to wander through farm pastures, to scale peaks, and to mosey through small Vermont towns. This list isn't necessarily in order of most beautiful places, for each place has its own unique splendor, and ranking them seems untenable. Now to the list!
1. Shelburne Farms
Shelburne Farms is the darling of Vermont farmlands. The estate provides splendid views of the Green Mountains, and the grounds teem with rolling hills and old, castle-like barns.
2. Quechee Gorge, Hartford
From the Quechee Gorge Bridge, you will be treated to this grand view of the gorge below. The picturesque location is beautiful year-round, and you can meander down into the gorge and walk along the river.
3. Fall Foliage in Stowe
A drive through Stowe in October when the leaves show their miraculous fall colors is one of the most classic Vermont scenes. Seeing entire swaths of trees covered with a myriad of orange, red, and yellow will leave you speechless.
4. Kettle Pond, Groton State Forest
The serene and isolated Kettle Pond in the Groton State Forest offers visitors stunning views of Vermont's landscapes. Enjoy hiking, swimming, biking, and more in this scenic area.
5. Champlain Islands
There is nothing quite like riding through the Champlain Islands on a warm summer day. Views of Lake Champlain with the Green Mountains in the backdrop will greet you at almost every turn in the islands, or at least that is what it feels like.
6. Rock of Ages Granite Quarry, Barre
The otherworldy Rock of Ages Granite Quarry stuns with its size and turquoise color. The structure and unusual shapes make this quarry look like it came from a different planet. You will also discover vistas of the surrounding forests and mountains from atop the quarry.
7. Sunset Over Lake Champlain, Burlington
A summer evening stroll down to the waterfront in Burlington as the sun sets behind the blue Adirondack Mountains is one of those moments that you won't ever forget. The transcendent color of the water and the red-orange clouds coupled with the darkening mountains all come together to create a supernatural sight.
8. Skyline Drive Mt. Equinox
The Skyline Drive up to Mount Equinox presents dramatic and vast panoramic views of the Green Mountains. At over 3,800 feet, enjoy the splendor of all this scene has to offer.
9. Lake Willoughby, Westmore
The peaceful and gorgeous Lake Willoughby in Westmore is abundant in natural beauty and adventure. Enjoy swimming, hiking, and biking in the undisturbed Willoughby State Forest.
