Utahns are pretty amazing people. Many come from strong, pioneer stock, which means that we’re hard-working, tough and innovative. Pioneers came to the state when it was a desolate, foreboding place, and managed to create beautiful, vibrant communities within just a few years. Those of us who aren’t descendants of pioneers have adopted the same strengths as those who are, and now we have skills, talents and dedication that people in other state never will.
Today, Utahns are still pretty amazing. Here are 12 things Utahns do better than anyone else.
1. Changing The World
Philo T. Farnsworth's invention that made television possible certainly changed the world. The University of Utah was one of four universities in the U.S. to develop and improve a network that would later become the Internet. These are just two examples of our innovation and world-wide influence.
2. Celebrating a Hindu Festival...Without Actually Being Hindu
The Color Festival in Spanish Fork is the largest in the world...and it's mostly attended by Utahns, many of whom live in Utah County, and are Mormon.
3. Digging Holes
The Bingham Copper Mine is more than .6 miles deep and 2.5 miles wide - the largest man-made excavation on the planet.
4. Recreating
With all the hiking, biking, skiing, backpacking, snowshoes, ATV riding, camping and more here...how could we not be the best at it?
5. Selling Goods And Services
Forbes Magazine names Utah the best state for business pretty much every year, and we definitely have tons of locally-owned businesses. We're also the unofficial Multi-level Marketing capital of the world.
6. Making New Utahns
Utah has the highest birthrate in the nation.
7. Exporting Mormonism
The Mormon Church's site states that it currently has 74,079 missionaries in the field. Of course, not all of them are Utahns, but of the 15 Missionary Training Centers, the one in Utah is the largest.
8. Educating
While our per-pupil spending is always woefully low, Utah has the best-educated workforce in the nation. This is thanks to dedicated, incredibly hard-working Utah teachers and involved parents.
9. Saying "No" To Alcohol And Tobacco
Utah has the lowest rate percentage of smokers in the nation, and the lowest annual consumption of alcohol.
10. Saying "Yes" To Porn
Utah has the highest number of online porn subscriptions per capita. I'm not sure this has anything to do with number 6...
11. Giving Time And Money
Utahns are the most generous people in the country. We rank the highest in the nation for charitable donations, and volunteerism.
12. Committing Affinity Fraud
Utahns trust each other, because, in general, we're honest, trustworthy people. However, sometimes that trust is misplaced. Utah is number one in the country for affinity fraud.
