South Carolina is a fun place to live as well as a fun place to visit. Whether you're currently living in the Palmetto State, visiting on holiday or planning to make your way here in the future, there are many unique things to do in South Carolina. Here are some to add to your list:
1. Visit America's #1 city.
In July of 2015, Condé Nast Traveler's Reader's Choice Awards named Charleston the Number One City In North America. Spend any amount of time in the Holy City where the historic charm is gushing from every curb and you'll see why.
2. Go see the place where the Civil War began.
Fort Sumter, in Charleston Harbor, is the spot where the Civil War began. Take a short cruise over to this majestic monument and walk in the steps of both confederate and union soldiers.
3. Hike the Palmetto Trail.
Imagine hiking from the South Carolina coast to the North Carolina state line over in the western-most part of the upstate. Nearly two-thirds of this 500 mile trail is now complete and you can pick and choose the "passages" you want to tackle. Hike as much or as little of the trail as you want. Only in South Carolina.
4. Visit the ONLY Tea Plantation in North America.
The Bigelow Tea company offers a farm tour as well as walk through of the tea factory. A must see!
5. Hold and play with a baby tiger.
Get up close and personal at Myrtle Beach Safari. Swim with a tiger if you want! But above all else, make sure you get a great photo like this one.
6. Explore the largest tract of old growth hardwood forest in the United States.
Make your way through Congaree National Park for some awesome scenery. This 26,000+ acre boardwalk-lined park offers upfront views of swamps too.
7. Go see the oldest oak tree east of the Mississippi.
The Angel Oak tree on Johns Island is said to be 1500 years old. She has weathered hurricanes, droughts and an earthquake, yet she's still standing. Her longest branch is 187-feet. Wow.
8. Spend the day on a deserted island.
Cape Romain Wildlife Preserve and Bull Island in the Lowcountry are a beautiful escape for the day. Catch a ferry over in the morning and then hop a ride back later in the day. In between, enjoy some solitude on an island where you're practically the only person around.
9. Take an epic train ride on vintage rail.
Saturdays June through August board the Rockton & Rion Express at the South Carolina Railroad Museum for a journey through the countryside of the Palmetto State.
10. Visit the #1 state park in South Carolina.
South Carolina has 46 counties and 47 state parks. Visit the most traveled park of them all: Hunting Island State Park off the coast of Beaufort. Enjoy miles and miles of hiking trails, beautiful beach vistas and a walk up to the top of Hunting Island's lighthouse.
