North Carolina has officially experienced its first snowfall of the season, and even if you didn't get to see the flakes...you've more than likely had a few bitterly cold days that make you say, "Ok, it's officially winter." While everyone has their season of choice, North Carolina winters aren't that terrible. Sure, it's pitch black by 6 p.m. and maybe we all have a case of the winter blues from time to time, but as someone who has survived over 20 North Carolina winters, I can say it's not that bad. It's really quite fun if you just follow these 12 suggestions.
1. It's not the milk and bread that's key - it's the libations.
First of all, if I'm snowed in I don't want to survive off milk and bread. Give me good snacks, a lot of wine, and some hot cocoa.
2. And snow parties are THE BEST
The frenzy before the storm is sometimes more fun than the storm itself. Once the snow starts falling though, cozy up with some close friends and family (and everything mentioned in #1) for an epic snow party. From late night sledding sessions to making a delicious pot of chili, this is the real bonding time.
3. Always have a sled on standby - you never know when a snowstorm might hit
And don't expect to find one in any store right before a snowstorm is predicted. If you can't find a sled, though, I've found a baking pan works well too.
4. Absolutely no one can drive in the snow no matter how many times they've done it.
Once that first flurry hits the ground it's best to be EXTRA cautious when driving.
5. The key to still enjoying the outside during winter: bonfires.
It's even better when it's right after Christmas and there's a large supply of Christmas trees for you and your friends to burn (and stay warm).
6. It might be freezing cold today, but don't be surprised if it's 80 degrees the next day. Going from AC to heat in the same week (or even day) isn't that surprising.
You can't call yourself a North Carolinian until you switch from heat to AC in the same day.
7. This is the best time of year to visit the beach - no crowds, stunning sunrises and sunsets, and cheaper rental rates.
You can explore and see more without the hassle of summertime tourists and traffic.
8. Take advantage of the bizarrely warm days by having hiking and bucket list destinations pre-planned.
And if you're still wondering what to do, we have plenty of bucket list hikes, destinations, and short or long-term getaways right here on our page!
9. And if it's super freezing cold, there's still a variety of indoor options to occupy your weekend.
From chocolate or cheese factory tours to plenty of shopping, museums, art galleries and (my personal favorite) breweries, winter is great for exploring all the indoor options throughout the state.
10. The waterfalls freeze - and it's awesome.
Just make sure to check which portions of the Blue Ridge Parkway are open before venturing out.
11. Savor the rare snowfall because you don't know if you'll get one next year.
This is more so true for those in the coastal/eastern/Charlotte region of the state.
12. For the most part, the winters here are pretty mild and before you know it, the flowers will be blooming and spring will be in the air. Enjoy it while it lasts!
Don't count down the days to spring just yet!
Winter can be really awesome here - the biggest secret is to just give it a chance and have fun! Embrace the cold weather while it lasts. What are some ways you survive winter in North Carolina?
Another great part about winter in NC is snow sports. If you're not planning to hop on a snowboard or a pair of skis, you must visit this amazing snow tubing area.
