As much as we may fight it and hate to admit it, oftentimes in life stereotypes can be true. While it may not always be the most fun experience to listen to someone tell you about yourself, we've compiled a fun list of stereotypes about New Yorkers that won't hurt your feelings too badly.
1. All the horror stories you heard about our potholes are true.
Harsh winter weather, snow plows and salt, these are a few of New York's least favorite things! Other states may not have to worry about the severity of potholes and the various types of damage that they can do to your vehicle, but everyone living in the state of New York certainly does.
2. We're overflowing with pride for our state and our teams.
New Yorkers wear a big NY across their chests like the most glorious badge of honor. We love living here! One of our favorite ways to showcase our state pride is by cheering on our favorite home teams. Whether it's basketball or football or baseball or hockey, New York teams have a strong fanbase that we're widely known for.
3. We're really over the moon about our small towns.
Other states may give praise to their small towns but in New York, we're truly all about them. It's in our small towns that you can get a look at what most of us consider to be the "real" New York. Where friendly faces, great food and awesome activities await you!
4. We may be guilty of being food snobs.
It feels nearly impossible not to become a bit of a food snob while living anywhere in New York. There's a reason why everyone loves our pizza and wings!
5. And we know how to come up with some pretty creative dishes.
Aside from pizza and wings, most of the famous dishes that are in New York are ones are unique to our state and unlike anything you'll find in other parts of the country. With favorite items like spiedies, Utica greens, chicken riggies, white hots and more, it's hard to control yourself from constantly eating while you live in the Empire State.
6. Our taxes are definitely a bit brutal.
It's true, we don't just complain about New York's taxes for our health. Depending on where you live, you'll often find New Yorkers traveling out of state to do their shopping to avoid being taxed on every single thing. In general, our taxes rough. You'll either come to appreciate them or loathe them to a horrendous extent.
7. Times Square is actually as unappealing as we make it sound.
While we don't discredit the fact that experiencing Times Square for yourself at least once should almost indefinitely be on everyone's bucket list, this area of the Big Apple is far from being the best attraction that you can visit. The bright lights that keep so much of the city lit all throughout the night are incredible to see, but the mass crowds and chaos usually aren't worth the hassle.
8. We're always longing for the mountains.
No matter what region of New York we're from, all of us can agree that there's so much to love about the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains.
9. And our favorite form of exercise is to get outdoors.
With beautiful landscapes surrounding us everywhere and hundreds of state parks to explore, New Yorkers always prefer to get their exercise outside. Whether it's climbing to the top of a mountain or hiking through gorges to make your way to waterfalls, getting outside is our favorite thing to do.
10. Yes, some of us have accents.
If you ask any of us if we have accents the answer will always be no. We'll never admit to having accents and we'll almost always retort back with the fact that you're the one with the accent.
11. We really are that concerned with defining where Upstate New York is.
To out of town folks it may seem silly to waste such time and energy arguing over where exactly Upstate New York is, but to us it's quite important. You'll find that most of our residents who fall below Westchester County have a habit of calling anything above them Upstate, while our residents who find themselves way up north won't consider anything below Albany to be in our Upstate region. The wheel of argumentation will forever be turning over this matter!
