If you live in the Land of Enchantment then you know, either from birth or after making an unfortunate misstep, that there are certain unwritten rules. The majority of New Mexicans won’t get busted doing the following 11 things:
1. Wasting water.
We’re a pretty water conscious bunch because we know what a valuable and scarce resource it is.
2. Complaining about rain.
Monsoon season is a cause for celebration.
3. Ignoring flash flood warnings.
We know to avoid arroyos and slot canyons if it’s going to rain.
4. Tossing a lit cigarette out a car window.
Wildfires are no joke.
5. Going an entire week without consuming chile.
Many New Mexicans eat it several times a day.
6. Rejecting a dish for being too spicy.
Has every single taste bud in your mouth been scorched off? No? Then it’s mild.
7. Staying inside when the weather’s good.
We’re an outdoorsy bunch and we love to get out in nature.
8. Ignoring a sunset.
Okay, we might not always be up in time to witness sunrise but you can bet we’re soaking in the glory of a New Mexican sunset.
9. Thinking that there aren’t enough people living here.
A lot of New Mexicans view our low population density as a positive.
10. Overlooking the beauty of the Land of Enchantment.
We know the scenery here is truly spectacular.
11. Leaving and staying gone.
We might try living in other states for a while but most of us find the lure of New Mexico too great and we eventually return.
