No matter how long you’ve lived somewhere, there’s always more to discover. That’s especially true in Massachusetts, where awesome hidden gems abound. Here are a few places across the state that are still flying somewhat under-the-radar.
1. LEGOLAND Discovery Center, Somerville
Kids and their parents will go nuts for this massive LEGO center and shop at Assembly Row in Somerville. Learn how LEGO bricks are made, build your own LEGO house, ride down a slide into giant soft LEGO bricks, soar in a chariot at the Kingdom Quest Laser Rider and so much more. They also host the occasional adults-only night for older LEGO fanatics. (598 Assembly Row, Somerville)
2. Lake Dennison, Winchendon
This gorgeous lake is a beautiful swimming hole in central Massachusetts. With it’s blue waters, on-season lifeguard and stunning scenery, it’s a good choice for cooling off in the summer or hiking in the winter. (Lake Dennison Recreation Area, 219 Baldwinville State Road, Winchendon)
3. Hammond Castle, Gloucester
This majestic castle is perched on the coast of Gloucester and is a truly amazing spot to explore. Filled with antiques and oddities collected by the estate's original eccentric owner, Hammond Castle offers spectacular views, great atmosphere and even a secret passageway. 4. Animal Adventures, Bolton
This animal rescue center isn’t a zoo, which means you can view the beautiful creatures here up close and actually interact with them. The center is home to everything from kangaroos to owls, and visitors are allowed to pet and feed some rare creatures themselves. (Animal Adventures Rescue Center, 336 Sugar Road, Bolton)
5. CoCo Key Water Park, Danvers
This massive indoor water park in Danvers is open all year round! You can whiz down water slides, play in pools, relax in the lazy river and hit the arcades in this 65,000-square-foot complex that offers day passes and plenty of free parking. (50 Ferncroft Road, Danvers)
6. Mount Greylock
Climbing to the top of Massachusetts' highest mountain is incredibly fun and vastly underrated. In fact, you don't even have to climb on foot – driving to the top is just as scenic. This is a great activity for any season and the view from the peak is amazing.
7. Bousquet Mountain, Pittsfield
Bousquet Mountain is a great place to go snow tubing, snowboarding and skiing in the winter. There’s plenty of terrain for beginners and helpful staff abound. Bousquet Mountain also offers a great aerial ropes course for summer fun. (101 Dan Fox Drive, Pittsfield)
8. The Queen's Cups, Worcester
Looking for an incredible sugar rush? Look no further than the Queen's Cups in Worcester. This gourmet cupcakery churns out sweet treats that have to be tasted to be believed. From rainbow frosting to Bailey's-infused cupcakes, the selection here is as creative as it is tasty. (56 Water Street, Worcester)
9. Housatonic River Walk, Great Barrington
Amble along the Housatonic River on this short walk that follows the curve of the water. It's located right in town for easy access and is a great place to relax, admire the wildlife or practice photography. (195 Main Street, Great Barrington)
10. Roxy’s Gourmet Grilled Cheese in Allston, South Boston and Lynnfield
Grilled cheese may be the king of comfort food, and Roxy's has elevated the simple cheese sandwich to something even greater. Try amazing flavor combos like spicy honey and bacon, poutine stuffing, and short ribs and caramelized onions. Your tastebuds may rupture. (485 Cambridge Street, Allston)
