Iowa is no Hollywood, but we have had our fair share of blockbuster hits filmed in the state. From horror movies to comedies, to dramas and more, here are 8 movies that you probably didn't know were filmed in Iowa. Some of these will really surprise you!
1. Children of the Corn
Both Children of the Corn movies (1989 and 2009) were filmed in several Iowa towns including: Sioux City, Hornick, Salix, and Whiting. The popular Stephen King horror movies featured a cult of children who believe everyone over the age of 18 must be killed. That's enough to make you want to stay away from corn fields at night...
2. Cold Turkey
This 1971 film starring Dick Van Dyke was filmed in Greenfield, Winterset, Macksburg, and Orient. The story line is based on the fictional town of Eagle Rock, Iowa, and a big tobacco company who offers them $25 million to quit smoking for 30 days. Little do they know, though, that the tobacco company's PR director is sabotaging the effort.
3. Starman
This 1984 movie featuring Jeff Bridges was filmed mostly in the Southwest, but also in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The plot centers around an alien who takes the form of a young widow's husband and asks her to drive him from Wisconsin to Arizona, with the government trying to stop them on the way.
4. Field of Dreams
This movie is very popular, but there are still people who don't know that it was filmed in Iowa! You can actually go see the film site in Dyersville. This 1989 flick starring Kevin Costner and James Earl Jones centers around an Iowa farmer who hears voices, and interprets them as a command to build a baseball diamond in his fields. After he does, the Chicago White Sox come. If you haven't seen this, then you really need to put this on your to-watch list...
5. Twister
Another really popular film, Twister, is one that many people don't know was filmed in Iowa; the movie is set in Oklahoma. This 1996 hit starring Helen Hunt was filmed in several Iowa towns including: Ames, Boone, Eldora, Whitten, and Rippey. The film is about two storm chasers on the brink of divorce. They must join together to create a tornado measurement device, putting themselves in the heart of extremely violent tornadoes. The film was highly praised for its special effects, which were excellent for its time.
6. Bridges of Madison County
This is yet another very popular movie, which many younger people don't know about, or don't know it was filmed in Iowa. The 1995 movie featuring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep was filmed in Winterset and Adel. The film is a drama/romance about a photographer who wanders into the life of a housewife, resulting in a short, bittersweet romance while the woman's husband and kids are away at the Illinois State Fair.
7. Crazies
This popular 2010 horror movie was filmed in Winterset and Lenox, Iowa, as well as in several towns in Georgia. The movie is about the inhabitants of a small Iowa town, who are suddenly plagued by insanity and then death after a mysterious toxin contaminates their water supply.
8. Sugar
This 2008 flick was filmed in Davenport and Burlington, and tells the story of a Dominican baseball star named Miguel "Sugar" Santos, who is recruited to play in the U.S. minor-leagues.
