As a former resident of several East Coast states, I can say firsthand that Hoosiers are some of the best people you'll ever meet. I've heard that Midwestern folks are nice, but I have to say, there's something extra special about people in Indiana. Here's what I think makes Hoosiers stand out amongst residents of other states:
1. Hoosiers Always Have Time to Talk to You
Coming from Jersey, this was a little startling to me at first. People were polite in grocery stores, asked me how my day was going, and stranger yet, they genuinely wanted to have a conversation with me. My East Coast suspicions have since dissipated, and now, I love how invested Hoosiers are in their neighbors', friends', and colleagues' lives. It's refreshing in today's day and age.
2. Hoosiers are Always Prepared
In Indiana, the weather can change drastically within the same day. Tornadoes can strike without much warning and droughts can drag on throughout the summer. In all aspects of life, Hoosiers have learned to prepare for anything, almost instantly. Having people who can adapt so easily around you is one of the best perks about Indiana residents.
3. Hoosiers are Great Cooks
Sure, this is a bit of a generalization, but growing up on a land filled with farms, it makes sense. Hoosiers, in general, love to create great tasting dishes and are particularly big on farm to table meals, since there are so many fresh options available here.
How does this equate to Hoosiers being great people? If food isn't enough, their nurturing nature ought to be.
4. Hoosiers Love to Volunteer
The Midwest in general is known for their huge volunteering effort, with nearly 1/3 of the population involved in volunteer work. Indiana is no exception. If you turn to Indianapolis alone, you'll find hundreds of companies that encourage their employees to volunteer, dozens of volunteer-based businesses, and so many opportunities to help, it's almost unbelievable.
5. Hoosiers Love This State
Hoosiers are some of the best people because they genuinely love where they live. They take pride in their history and heritage and instead of complaining about their neighborhoods or state, work together to improve anything that needs work.
6. Hoosiers are Smart
With easy access to some of the best universities and colleges in the country, Hoosiers have a real in-state advantage.
Of course, book smart isn't the only type of smart that Hoosiers possess. Many have a keen sense of direction and practical skills that make them great people to know.
7. Hoosiers are Extremely Honest
Of course this one can vary individually, but overall, Hoosiers are an honest bunch. They do not see the need to lie or play games with other people.
Why? It's probably because Hoosiers are so open and communicative to being with. Honesty tends to go hand-in-hand with those qualities.
8. Hoosiers are Loyal People
The result of Hoosiers' pride in their state, perhaps, but Hoosier loyalty is truly unique. If a Hoosier tells you they've got your back, they mean it. But don't try to take advantage of them. Remember, Hoosiers are smart and their friendship does know some bounds.
9. Hoosiers are One-of-a-Kind
Perhaps Kurt Vonnegut said it best; "I don't know what it is about Hoosiers. But wherever you go there is always a Hoosier doing something very important there."
In short, Hoosiers stand out positively and are brought up to live up to the good qualities of Hoosiers past.
I know my fellow Hoosiers will all agree that there is just that special something about people from Indiana. As a converted Hoosier, I can attest that this state is filled with some of the best people in the country. Hoosiers are a great group of people and I'm glad to call them my neighbors and friends.
