On June 15, 1836, Arkansas became a state. Let's celebrate 180 years of statehood by listing a few of the reasons homegrown Arkansans are the absolute best. So today, hug your local Arkansan, enjoy a tall glass of milk, eat a vine ripe pink tomato, cook up some rice, sit beneath a pine tree, listen to the honeybees, check out this list of Arkansas symbols, and remember that in Arkansas, The People Rule.
That's our state motto, "The People Rule."
Right on, state motto. Right. On.
1. We’re friendly.
2. We help each other.
This is a photo of a group of volunteers from the University of Central Arkansas helping to clean up after a 2014 tornado.
3. We know how to grow stuff.
With the exception of citrus fruits, Arkansas produces every crop that can be grown in the continental United States.
4. We’re pretty good at preserving our history.
5. We know a good chapel when we see one.
Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel in Bella Vista
Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs
No, you’re not seeing in triplicate. These three chapels around the state were all designed by E. Fay Jones.

6. We never underestimate our fondness for trees.
With 18.8 million acres of forested land, Arkansans love their trees. Pictured above is Ouachita National Forest.
7. We appreciate our landscapes. . .
8. . . . and our scenic vistas. . .
9. . . . and our waterways.
10. We’ve got sporting attitudes.
11. We know how to take things nice and slow. . .
12. . . . and when to stop and smell the flowers.
13. We produced Johnny Cash . . .
That’s right, the Man in Black is one of us.
14. . . . and Maya Angelou.
There she is, homegrown and spectacular.
15. And most of all, we love our home.
