South Dakota's hiking trails give you the opportunity to get out and enjoy our state's natural beauty. But there's one trail that offers more than just gorgeous forest...it's said to be haunted by spirits. Native Americans believed this place to be haunted, and some hikers agree.
Sica Hollow State Park is beautiful place in northeast South Dakota. But...many people think these woods are haunted.
Native Americans named this place "Sica," which means "evil." The spring waters that flowed here were tinted red from minerals, which appeared to be blood. People believed that the spirits of the dead were manifesting with blood and flesh flowing in these waters.
The Trail of the Spirits meanders through the dense forest. It's secluded and hauntingly beautiful.
Some visitors on this trail report that there's no wildlife to be seen, and that a creepy silence pervades this space.
Walk quietly and you might hear the sound of drums.
At night, some people even report that they've seen the ghostly spirits of Native Americans.
Get near the reddish-colored bogs and you may experience more paranormal activity.
The gurgling of the brook is likely the only noise you'll hear here...unless you hear whispers or chanting.
In the 1970s, several people disappeared from this area. They were never found.
Some people think a bear may have attacked and dragged them away. Others think something much more evil was at play.
What do you think? Is this place haunted, creepy or just peaceful?
The Trail of the Spirits is located at Sica Hollow State Park 44950 Park Road, Sisseton.
