There is a grand old hotel in Abbeville that has quite the storied history. It has risen from the dead on at least three occasions, undergone restorations and renovations - and then more restorations - and is now 115 years old. In the midst of it all, what was formerly call the Eureka Hotel has managed to wind up a thriving, historic inn listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Eureka Hotel, completed in 1903, is now called The Belmont Inn.
It was built to accommodate the textile industry, whose traveling salesmen pinned Abbeville the halfway point between New York and Miami.
Soon after the hotel opened, it became obvious the salesmen could use some entertainment. So the Abbeville Opera House was built across the street, and the performers would often stay at the hotel.
In the years between the grand opening in 1903 and today, the Belmont has been purchased, converted into a semi-retirement home, and then sold three more times. With each purchase came either renovations or restorations.
With any major construction, old buildings are known to stir up energy from the past. And that's rumored to be the case at the Belmont — although the hotel certainly doesn't promote the idea. However, there are whispers that a ghostly entity named Abraham has been spotted on the ground floor of the hotel. Most 'sightings' report just seeing him out of the corner of their eye.
Others report seeing a man on the main staircase on the first floor — a ghostly figure of a man who isn't actually there.
The Belmont Hotel is a warm and inviting place to stay, boasting the charm and ambiance of a bygone era. Over the years, renovations and restorations have increased the size of the hotel to 25 elegantly restored guest rooms, 2 restaurants and a pub.
The hotel sits on the Square in historic downtown Abbeville, offering picturesque views of the charming little city.
A visit to Abbeville and the historic Belmont Inn pairs nicely with dinner at the Belmont and then a show at the Abbeville Opera House. Arrive early to explore the quaint little shops on the Square. The Belmont Inn is located at 104 E Pickens St., Abbeville, SC 29620. Find more information on their official website.
