Due to major wildfires spreading across North Carolina, thousands have been forced to evacuate their homes. With over 40,000 acres burned, these rampant fires have burned since October 23rd and the chance of containment any time soon is slim. This event that is truly devastating, especially for those in the western part of the state who had to leave their homes and belongings behind. Here's more on what has been deemed the worst wildfire in North Carolina's recent history.
North Carolina's Governor Pat McCrory, who has compared these fires to the likes of California wildfires, identifies safety as a top priority. So far, that has meant thousands of North Carolina residents evacuating their homes in the western portion of the state.
Nearly 1,600 firefighters are working to contain what has now been counted as 20 distinctive fires. Among these, Party Rock Fire in Rutherford County is currently the number two priority fire in the country. Firefighters from as far as Alaska have flown in to aid with this dire situation.
It’s uncertain how this fire was started. Many believe it may have been humans, although there has been no confirmation yet. In the meantime, anyone within the area should immediately report if they see someone starting a fire in these hazardous conditions.
Fortunately, with their experience and split-second decision making skills, firefighters have managed to save all structures that were threatened by the Party Rock Fire. Because of them, hundreds of citizens have peace of mind, knowing their homes have been saved.
Wildfires are incredibly unpredictable, and these are no different. Officials are doing their best to determine how long they will burn and some are guessing it could be until March.
