Ah, cheese. The staff of life. Or at least, it should be. If you love good cheese, a great story and a gorgeous setting, then a visit to The Grey Barn farm should be on your bucket list.
This family-owned farm is a cheese-lover’s paradise, and positively oozes old-fashioned New England charm. Read on to find out more.
The story of this cheese farm is pretty amazing.
The owners had no previous farming experience before reviving this historic dairy farm, but they were dedicated to the idea of creating real food that tastes really good.
They bought a farm, assembled a few cows, pigs and chickens, and set about learning how to be farmers.
It wasn’t easy, but they found their way through classes, YouTube videos and the guidance of fellow farmers.
Today, Grey Barn produces award-winning cheese without all the pretentiousness.
So, how can you experience the cheesy goodness of this awesome farm? Just head down for a visit!
The farm offers tours seasonally in the spring and summer, and during the cooler months by appointment.
You’ll meet the four-legged and winged residents of the farm, learn about the cheese-making process, and get the chance to sample their current creations.
The cheese matures for months in special cheese caves before making its debut.
If your heart skipped a beat at the words "cheese cave," don't worry. You're not alone.
These are happy cows. They're allowed to roam through green pastures and munch to their heart's content.
Did I mention it's pretty? Because it's really pretty.
....like, extremely pretty.
If you can’t make it for a tour, they also have a farm stand that is stocked with raw milk, pork, beef, eggs and, of course, delicious cheese.
The honor-box farm stand is open everyday from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm every day.
The Grey Barn farm is located at 22 South Road, Chilmark. If you can't get enough cheese, try heading out on the official Massachusetts cheese trail.
