Ever wonder which areas in Maryland are the most dangerous? While you can probably guess a few, some of these may surprise you. We searched through several sources to compile this list of the 12 most dangerous places in Maryland after dark. Take a look.
1. Baltimore
It's no surprise that Baltimore is number one when it comes to dangerous places in Maryland. Its violent crime rate surpasses all other Maryland towns and it's constantly listed in the top 10 most dangerous places in the entire U.S. There have been 109 homicides in Baltimore so far in 2020. 2. Elkton
According to Neighborhood Scout, Elkton's violent crime rate is higher than the national average. And while property crime rates for Maryland are about 1 in 49, Elkton's rate is 1 in 16.
3. Bladensburg
Neighborhood Scout reports that Bladensburg's annual crimes per square mile is 386. To put that in perspective, the national average is a mere 31.1.
4. Ocean City
Ocean City has recently popped up on several "dangerous" lists. According to Neighborhood Scout, Ocean City's safest areas are Bay Shore Acres and Cape Isle of Wight. However, the city ranks zero percent safer than other U.S. cities. Your chances of becoming a victim of property crime are 1 in 8 in Ocean City compared to 1 in 49 in Maryland.
5. Salisbury
According to RoadSnacks, Salisbury ranks near the top of the list when it comes to both violent and property crimes. Total crimes tally 5,484, which is 113.5 percent above the nation average. This is a charming place to visit during the day but you may not want to wander around at night.
6. Cambridge
With a mix of thefts, rapes, and assault, Cambridge comes in at number six on our list and is only two percent safer than other U.S. cities, according to Neighborhood Scout.. Your chances of becoming the victim of a violent crime in Cambridge are 1 in 94 compared to a 1 in 213 chance overall in Maryland. Cambridge continues to appear on national reports due to violence, and it could continue to rank as the years progress.
7) Hyattsville
Hyattsville's is just three percent safer than other U.S. cities, according to Neighborhood Scout. Hyattsville experiences 51 property crimes for every 1,000 residents. That number is just 30 out of 1,000 for Maryland as a whole.
8. Suitland
Suitland's annual crimes per square mile ranks at 221 via Neighborhood Scout. Compare that to Maryland's average of 52, and that's a pretty significant amount.
9. Princess Anne
According to statistics, Princess Anne is only safer than two percent of U.S. cities. The odds of becoming a victim of a violent crime are 1 in 80, which is significantly higher than Maryland's average of 1 in 213.
10. Mount Rainier
At under one square mile, Mount Rainier may be small, but it packs a lot of crime into its little town. Mount Rainier continuously ranks on Maryland's most dangerous lists for its violent crime and property thefts. While it's nine percent safer than other U.S. cities, your chances of becoming a victim of property crime are 1 in 30, according to Neighborhood Scout.
11. Temple Hills
Temple Hills is safer than just 17 percent of other U.S. cities, according to
Neighborhood Scout. Your chances of becoming a victim of a violent crime are 1 in 243 in Temple Hills. You also have a 1 in 41 chance of becoming a victim of property crime.
12. Cumberland
Sorry, Western Maryland. Cumberland just makes our list with crimes per square mile at 101 a year. It's only safer than four percent of U.S. cities, according to Neighborhood Scout. Your chances of becoming a victim of property crime are 1 in 22 in Cumberland.
