When researching Maryland's top attractions, there are a few places that constantly appear on top 10 lists. The following spot is one of them. Not only does it cover a massive amount of the state, making it easily accessible, but it's also filled with history and scenery. When it comes to outdoor day trips, nothing compares to the iconic C & O Canal.
Covering 184.5 miles from DC to Cumberland, the C & O Canal is a big part of the state. Those looking to get outdoors will find the towpath to be pleasantly flat, perfect for walking, jogging, or cycling.
Opt to take a step back in time by partaking in a canal boat ride pulled by mules. A must-do experience at least once.
With so much area covered, the C & O Canal has an endless amount of things to see. Wildlife is abundant and you may even spot a deer (or several) while journeying the towpath.
If you chose to explore around the Williamsport area, you'll be greeted with this unique view of Cushwa Basin. Bring your camera!
Head further west and you'll find Paw Paw Tunnel. This structure is enchanting on the exterior...
And a journey through its interior is a one-of-a-kind experience. Be sure to bring a flashlight because the middle of the tunnel is pitch black.
The western portion also includes Oldtown, which is sprinkled with historic homes and rustic sights.
The different seasons offer variety. Colorful wildflowers bloom along the path during spring. And be sure to visit during autumn for copper-colored hues.
For these reasons and more, the C & O Canal could easily be considered Maryland's top outdoor attraction. If you have yet to visit, what are you waiting for?
