We've all watched as Maine has become a destination for those in search of new culinary adventures. We're excited by that, but we also want to make sure we're not forgetting some of the gems that have existed throughout the state for years. In the spirit of celebrating them, we give you this list of eastern Maine mainstays to check out this summer!
1. Morse’s Kraut Haus Restaurant, Waldoboro
If it's German food and groceries of all varieties that you're after, this is the place for you! Pick up any manner of German products and then make sure to come back for brunch. Get the babka french toast if you like delicious things. In fact, if you like delicious things get just about anything on the menu. Just don't forget they exist! Visit them at: 3856 Washington Road, Waldaboro / (207) 832-5569
2. Nealley's Corner Store, Hampden
From the outside Neally's is the perfect place to grab everything you need at the last minute when you can't get to the grocery store. But, a visit comes with the added bonus of some of the best Chinese food you'll find! Add to that the great Japanese selection and you'll be in heaven. Visit them at: 1230 Kennebec Road, Hampden / (207) 808-0555 or (207) 862-0097
3. Darby's Restaurant & Pub, Belfast
Those who go to Darby's go for the awesomely expected great pub food. From fried seafood to beef, this thirty-year-old institution doesn't disappoint. But, where it really shines to those looking for something unexpected is the Pad Thai. Along with the Buddha Bowl your taste buds won't be disappointed. Especially since you can get this with varying levels of spiciness. Visit them at: 155 High Street, Belfast / (207) 338-2339
4. Vasquez Mexican Food, Milbridge
If you're looking for real Mexican food - and we mean REALLY REAL - this is the place! What makes them so great? It could be that the sheer surprise that such good Mexican food could exist in Maine. Or it could be that they import the ingredients for their homemade tortillas. Either way, stop on in for a steak burrito this summer.
Visit them at: 38 Main Street, Milbridge / (207) 598-8141
5. Nocturnem Draft Haus, Bangor
While Maine may be no stranger to local brews and beer houses, we love this one for its decidedly Czech flair. You'll find Topinky here, just as you would all over the Czech Republic. This hearty bread, garlic and cheese combo is perfect with a good beer! Visit them at: 56 Main Street, Bangor / (207) 907-4380
6. Delicious Bangkok, Old Town
In addition to some pretty great Thai food, you'd never guess that this restaurant offers Korean food. If you've never tried bibimbap, we recommend you head straight here and give it a shot. There aren't a lot of Korean food options here in Maine, so it's great that you can get two types of food under one roof here! Visit them at: 151 Main Street, Old Town / (207) 827-5857
7. Layla's Bazaar, Orono
This one isn't exactly a restaurant, but since it can help you create some pretty incredible meals at home we felt it was worth including. It's also totally unexpected! Layla's carries Middle Eastern and Mediterranean groceries along with some super special spices, specialty teas and gifts. If you're looking to expand your dinner menu at home, you might look up some recipes and then head here for just about every ingredient you might need. Visit them at: 16 Mill Street, Orono / (207) 866-0815
