Did you know the James Dalton Highway, also called The Dalton Highway by locals, is one of the most dangerous roads there is due to its icy conditions, remote location, and unpaved portions? It's true. In fact, the James Dalton Highway is one of the most isolated roads in the U.S. and the northernmost highway in the state. Why is the Dalton Highway so dangerous? Take a closer look at the most dangerous highway in Alaska - if not the world.
The 414-mile route is considered dangerous and it's advised you always travel with survival gear in case of emergencies.
The highway only passes through 3 towns on its journey northward, which means only three gas stations and the nearest medical facilities are located in Fairbanks and Deadhorse at the very start and end of the road.
The highway has been featured in multiple seasons of the reality TV show, Ice Road Truckers.
It has also been featured on BBC's World's Most Dangerous Roads (it was literally the first episode), so it's pretty well-known how dangerous it is to travel the Dalton Highway - especially alone. The truckers that make the dangerous trek multiple times throughout the year attest to its treacherous conditions by giving the highway nicknames like Oil Spill Hill, Beaver Slide, and some less-printable titles.
The highway runs parallel to the pipeline and leads to Alaska's oil fields.
It was originally built as a supply road for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and named North Slope Haul Road, but now it also provides access to the three towns along the route and for tours to the Arctic Ocean.
It crosses Atigun Pass, a high mountain pass at 4,739 feet.
It offers stunning views, but in bad weather, the steep ascent and descent can be very dangerous.
Most of the road is unpaved, and you can get a flat tire easily if you’re not careful.
There may not be another motorist for long periods, so be sure you have the gear you need.
Traveling this road was the adventure of a lifetime!
It may be the most dangerous highway in Alaska, but it’s a grand journey if you have the time and forethought to put into it.
